Composite Resin Layering Principles

Composite Resin Layering Principles

Course Duration: 69 minutes  – 1 CE credit

Description
Modern composite resin layering has been largely inspired by the way ceramists build porcelain restorations. Like the natural tooth structured as a bilaminar complex of enamel and dentin composite restorations must replicate these optical properties to achieve lifelike results. Monolithic restorations are limited to superficial effects (paint-on techniques), whereas layering and microlayering approaches create internal optical effects that are both more natural and more durable. This lesson also demonstrates how the “additive approach” (extended margins) enhances optical integration, helps mask dentin sclerosis preventively, and improves the longevity of Class IV composites. Shade selection and shade guide systems are reviewed, along with both freehand and guided protocols. The session further details the “sandwich technique” and provides numerous clinical tips, including finishing and texturing of a complex case, to help clinicians achieve highly natural outcomes in both anterior and posterior composite restorations.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this lesson, the clinician will have learned how to apply advanced layering techniques to create esthetic, durable composite restorations that mimic natural tooth structure.
