Prep Design for Inlays/Onlays/Veneers
Course Duration: 77 minutes – 1 CE credit
Description
This session demonstrates how tooth preparation design for semi-(in)direct and indirect restorations is largely dictated by the manufacturing requirements of the restoration itself. Today, most inlays, onlays, and veneers are produced using subtractive processes, making it essential to understand the inherent limitations of milling and how they influence preparation geometry. At the same time, adhesive dentistry has expanded the boundaries of design, enabling more conservative and innovative approaches such as veneerlays, crownlays, and endocrowns. Special attention is given to thin restorations—such as occlusal and anterior veneers—which require a morphology-driven or mock-up–driven preparation. This concept will be illustrated step by step, emphasizing precision, preservation of tooth structure, and alignment with the final restorative outcome.
Learning Outcomes
Through this lesson, clinicians will understand how material choice and manufacturing constraints influence preparation design in view of adhesive principles. They will be able to expand restorative options and perform morphology- or mock-up–driven preparations for thin restorations.
