On-demand biomimetic courses
Prep Design for Direct Restorations
Course Duration: 76 minutes – 1 CE credit
Description
This lesson illustrates how the biomimetic approach prioritizes the preservation of sound tooth structure above all else. After a brief review of noninvasive and ultra-conservative techniques (micro- and macroabrasion, resin infiltration, and bleaching), the Presentation focuses on tooth preparation for direct bonding. Preparation design is no longer driven by “extension for prevention,” but instead guided solely by the need to achieve optimal visual and mechanical access for the removal of caries and existing restorations. The full clinical armamentarium is reviewed, including electric handpieces, visual aids, transillumination, and oscillating tips. Caries removal endpoints are also examined in depth, with careful consideration of the underlying biological context.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this lesson, clinicians will understand how to preserve maximum tooth structure, choose conservative treatment options, and design preparations with an updated armamentarium while respecting appropriate caries removal endpoints.
