Basics of Dental Biomechanics

PRESSroom ON DEMAND Basics of Dental Biomechanics

Course Duration: 60 minutes (1 CE credit)

Description
This review examines the critical mechanical properties of enamel, dentin, and the dentinoenamel junction (DEJ), including patterns of stress distribution in both anterior and posterior teeth. While the DEJ constitutes the benchmark for dentin bonding, key anatomical structures, such as marginal and transverse ridges, are highlighted for their essential role in maintaining tooth integrity under high functional loads. Crown flexure and cuspal deformation are influenced by factors including cavities, wear, and bio-corrosion. The biomechanical recovery of teeth depends not only on the choice of restorative materials and techniques but also on masticatory function and the progression of occlusion. The functional significance of cusps is also discussed.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this webinar, clinicians will be able to understand and explain the biomechanical challenges imposed by functional loading, cavities, wear, and bio-corrosion, and how these factors should ultimately guide restorative treatment
strategies.
